Three Ways to Keep Your Immune System Strong
‘Give me a fever and I can cure any disease’ – Hipprocrates
Immunity: Hippocrates famously said, “Give me a fever and I can cure any disease.” The idea that increased temperatures trigger the body’s immune system response is certainly not new. Fevers help your body to fight off infection by allowing certain immune cells to work more efficiently and effectively. According to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, hyperthermia, or the exposure of the body to high temperatures, gives these cells the ability to destroy virus-infected cells and tumor cells.
Mental Health: Jari Laukkanen, a Finnish cardiologist who’s fond of taking a daily sauna, has observed a similar pattern among larger groups. In a 2018 study of more than 2,000 Finnish men, he found a correlation between taking a traditional sauna four or more times a week and decreased risk of developing a physician-diagnosed mental-health disorder. The idea that extreme heat can improve mental health isn’t new. The Russian and Turkish Baths opened in 1892. Around that time, an Austrian scientist began giving patients fevers to treat psychosis—a technique that eventually earned him the 1927 Nobel Prize in medicine.
Heart Health: So many studies regarding the Finnish sauna and cardiovascular health have been done over the decades. The results show that the Finnish sauna strengthens the heart and blood vessels and a very recent study done with men showed that having a sauna 3 times a week lowered the risk of stroke by 63%!
From cleansing the skin to relaxing the mind with the scent of cedar and a eucalyptus steam (done at Thermae), the benefits are tremendous and should be a part of your wellness routine. Sauna memberships are available @ Thermae and are included in all treatments.
“…because viruses are constantly changing and becoming resistant to medications, it’s best to concentrate on strengthening your immune system rather than focusing on how to disarm the seemingly infinite number of microbes out there.”
Previously, scientists in Finland have published findings from a population-based study indicating that regular sauna bathing is associated with a reduced risk of coronary diseases and sudden cardiac death, hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Frequent sauna bathing has also been associated with a reduced risk of respiratory diseases and lower CRP levels. They strengthen immunity, cleanse the skin and detox the body.
Immunity: The heat generated by an infrared sauna stimulates energy at a cellular level which, in turn, increases the body’s production of white blood cells. These cells form a component of your blood and act as your immune system’s first line of defense when infection strikes.
Mental Health: In 2016, Charles Raison, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, published an intriguing study of 30 patients with clinical depression. Half of them rested on a bed while an infrared heat-lamp array raised their body temperature to 101.3 degrees. The control group was exposed to a treatment, which also involved bright lights but less heat. Though the study was small, whole-body warming showed a dramatic antidepressant effect. Raison’s colleagues are now trying to determine if infrared saunas might replicate their fancy medical-grade hot boxes.
Detoxification: One major benefit of infrared sauna use is detoxification. Impurities may come from the food you eat, the air you breathe, the liquids you drink, and anything else you may consume. Ensuring that your body can eliminate these toxins efficiently is one of the best ways to stay healthy and support your immune system. A typical 20-minute session in an infrared sauna allows your body to flush out these impurities from the inside out so your immune system has less to fight off.
